It is commonly used by English-speaking fans to refer to pornographic anime. Also used occasionally (particularly on the web or in fanfics) as an insult, with the same meaning as it has in Japanese. Note that hentai and ecchi are directly related words in Japanese (hentai was abbreviated as H, which is pronounced ecchi), but the connotation of hentai is now closer to the English deviant or pervert, while ecchi is more like lech or dirty, and generally mild.
In Japan "hentai" is commonly used to mean sexually perverted. "Ecchi/Hentai Anime" is slang for sexually explicit or pornographic comic books and animation, particularly Japanese anime and manga.
Hentai anime/manga often include sexual fantasies that would be impossible to film in reality. This may include portrayals of sexual acts which are physically impossible, unacceptable in society, or run counter to social norms. Examples include, but are not limited to, bukkake, group sex, bondage, creatures with tentacles, demons, mechanical devices, and/or other unique fetishes.
